Graduated from UCD with my PhD in 2003, before that did my degree in Zoology in UCD and attended Presentation Secondary School Kildare Town
University of St Andrews (never saw Kate or Wills though), Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, Teagasc
My Work: Working on ways to make meat and meat products healthier and tastier
My Typical Day: Could be animal sampling, extracting DNA, PCR, trying to figure out the data, or on a tough day writing research grants
What I'd do with the money: Challenge secondary school students to come up with a novel, fun experiment that could be carried out by primary school age children to illustrate a concept in food science, bring it together in a glossy fun protocol brochure or other medium and of course make sure it works!
Experimental design is an important aspect of science that secondary students don’t always get to experience in depth. With this prize I would like to encourage secondary school students to develop their experimental design skills. We could run a competition to challenge secondary students to come up with a novel experiment to illustrate a concept of their choice in food science. The experiment would have to be aimed at allowing primary school kids to think about and test concepts in food science in the classroom. I would be hoping to see great experiments that are novel, safe and fun, preferably rely only on household materials so that primary age students could carry them out and experience food science. The money could be used to establish a dedicated website and a prize fund for the winning experiments. The developers could have fun creating a clear and engaging protocol suitable for a younger audience, bringing it together in a glossy fun brochure or with whatever media they think would help communicate the experimental design and of course making sure it works!
