People actually vary a lot in how many tastebuds they have, so there is no real average as such. We actually count the fungiform papillae, or FP, which are the little bumps on your tongue that you can see. The tastebuds are in there, and some FP will have lots, others will have just a few. The number of FP can vary a lot as well, some people will have less than 10 per cm2, others can have lots more than that.
