I’ve always been a scientist, well since leaving college anyway.

I’ve had different part time jobs though. We have a farm at home, so that’s where I’ve spent most of my summers. I’ve also worked in different shops, and volunteered to help out in a brain injury rehab clinic. The worst job I’ve ever had though has to be going door to door signing people up to different energy providers (I didn’t last too long at that job).

My most prominent job before I put back on my lab coat and admitted to myself I could never truly abandon science was as an “Operational Excellence Analyst” in Paddy Power. I spent a lot of time in meetings, sending emails, planning, mapping processing, documenting, and managing projects. I really loved Paddy Power it was a great company and I actually learned a lot of skills that were relevant to doing a PhD. It’s basically one big 4 year long project and often requires a lot of managing to keep on track!

I worked in a bar and restaurant, in the evenings and weekends (and summers) while I was at college. I also worked in Dunnes up in Belfast for a year, mainly in the deli counter and the meat and fish counter, and sometimes stacking shelves in the fridge – brrrrrrr. I enjoyed them all, but of all the jobs I’ve had, I love working in science the best.

I did a postgrad and postdoc straight from college, so never had a different full time job but through part time and summer jobs in hospital kitchens I scrubbed a lot of giant porridge and pudding pots and as a result I now have a special appreciation for chefs who don’t burn the porridge!
